JACK CONVINCED ME NOT TO BROACH the subject of wendigos during breakfast. I was confused until he pointed out we couldn’t explain why we would be tracking that information.

“You can’t tell Chris you dreamed it,” he said as we walked into the lobby. “He’ll have questions ... and maybe want to send you to a dream clinic or something. About a year ago he mentioned he thought paranormal truths could be uncovered in dreams. I don’t want him experimenting on you.”

I wasn’t entirely opposed to the idea. “Can you get the name of that clinic from him? You know, for later.”

He studied me a bit and then nodded. “Sure. We can go. I want to be with you for whatever they have planned. If they see something freaky in your head, I don’t want them pushing things.”

“It could be quack science,” I reminded him. “They probably won’t see anything.”

“Probably not, but if they do, ... .” He didn’t finish. He didn’t have to. We both knew what would happen if the truth about me found its way to the wrong person. I kept picturing the movie Splash, except they wouldn’t lock me in a tube of water. They would choose some dark, underground lab. I might never see the sun again.

I shuddered at the thought.

“I won’t ever let anybody take you,” he promised, his gaze thorough as it searched my face. Sometimes I believed he could read my mind. He laughed at the notion whenever I mentioned it, but he was intuitive to the point of being psychic sometimes.

“I know.” I squeezed his hand as we walked into the dining room and started searching for our team. “I’m not afraid that you’ll never race to the rescue.” I was afraid that he would be killed in his zeal to protect me from Sybil, but that was a conversation for another time. “They’re over there.” I inclined my head.

He held my hand for the duration of the walk. The others were engaged in serious conversation, so I took a few moments to catch up.

“I’m not saying it’s definitely Bigfoot,” Chris, annoyed, insisted to Millie. “I’m just saying we can’t rule out Bigfoot.”

“And I’m saying Bigfoot isn’t big on the Etsy scene and isn’t making twig sculptures in the woods,” Millie insisted. “It’s not Bigfoot.”

“What did we miss?” I asked, hoping to defuse some of the tension settling over the table.

“The normal stuff,” Laura replied blandly. She seemed disinterested in the conversation. “Chris believes Bigfoot is out there killing kids, and Millie is mean.”

“I’ll show you mean,” Millie fired back, seemingly catching herself when Laura didn’t rise to the occasion to engage in the argument. “You haven’t even been out there,” she pointed. “I’m not sure you should have an opinion on the subject.”

“I don’t,” Laura replied. “I don’t have ... anything.” Rather than continue the conversation, she got to her feet and walked to the coffee bar. She was not the Laura I’d learned to loathe.

“I’ll get us coffee,” I said to Jack as I started to follow her.
